Would you make a trustworthy legal assistant?
Answer these serious and not so serious questions to discover whether you would make a good legal assistant.
1
A lawyer recorded a telephone conference call with clients and asks you to write down what was said. Unfortunately, you aren’t able to catch certain words that were recorded. What do you do?
A)
You write down what you understand and rely on your sense of logic and the context to fill in the rest.
B)
You skip the words that you cannot hear or you replace them by made-up words. If your boss asks you to explain these words, you will tell her that they represent what you weren’t able to hear.
C)
You trust what you have heard and your sense of logic and context. You also attach a note suggesting that the lawyer listen to the parts you had difficulty understanding to make sure that the document you wrote is correct.
D)
You call the lawyer and tell her that she doesn’t speak clearly and refuse to do the work because it would be a waste of your time.
2
A client calls in a panic and insists that it is an emergency, but the lawyer he wants to talk to is in a meeting. What do you do?
A)
You explain to him that the lawyer is in a meeting and give a time the lawyer will be free. You also offer to take a message for him.
B)
You tell him that the lawyer is not available and transfer his call to the lawyer’s voicemail.
C)
You ask for his name and the nature of the problem, and then you send a text message to the lawyer.
D)
You tell him that everyone has emergencies and that he needs to calm down before he calls next time.
3
A lawyer asks you to format, print, bind, and make several copies of an important document that she needs to file with the court. All this takes a very long time. Just when you think you are finished you realize that there are typos right in the middle of the document and that the table of contents also has mistakes. What do you do?
A)
You put all the copies in the recycling and start again.
B)
You correct the mistakes with liquid paper and a black pen.
C)
You undo the binding, fix the mistakes, and print new copies of only the pages that had mistakes.
D)
You leave it as it is: you are not about to redo all that hard work just for a few small mistakes that no one will notice.
4
The lawyer that you work with has an important trial in court tomorrow. She has not finished preparing and asks you to stay a little later today to help her get ready. What do you do?
A)
You say yes, but only for an extra hour.
B)
You apologize and tell her that you have a date for the movies tonight.
C)
You stay as long as is needed, but ask the lawyer to use these overtime hours towards taking an afternoon off on a day that is not so busy.
D)
You respond with “no way, are you kidding?” before slamming the door.
5
At the request of a lawyer in the office, you must plan a meeting with several of the staff and some clients. A client calls at the last minute to say that something has come up and that he cannot attend. What do you do?
A)
You organize the meeting as planned: one missing person is not such a big deal.
B)
Without thinking twice, you ask the client straight up what his big excuse is.
C)
You check to see if there is another time when everyone can meet. If this is not possible, you let the lawyer know what is happening.
D)
You suggest another day and time to the client for the meeting: May 26th, 2014. Everyone should be free then…
6
While you are working, your best friend calls you and talks you ear off about how her boyfriend has asked her to marry him. Meanwhile, there is call on the other line. What do you do?

You tell your friend to wait a few minutes while you take the incoming call.
B)
You let your friend finish her story. It is too romantic to interrupt! The other person will surely leave a voicemail.
C)
This would never happen. While you are working, you limit your personal calls.
D)
This would never happen. You do not have a best friend, you hate romance, and you hate hearing about weddings!
7
Every time lawyers reserve a conference room for a meeting, they ask you to make sure that everyone has something to drink. This time, however, they did not mention anything. What do you do?
A)
You call to ask the lawyer if she wants you to prepare drinks.
B)
When the clients arrive, you tell the clients that the office is having financial difficulties and cannot serve drinks at their meetings.
C)
You bring drinks to the meeting; it is an established practice and worst case scenario, you could always bring them back to the kitchen.

You are replacing the receptionist during her lunch break. A client who is waiting for her lawyer flips through a magazine looking really anxious. What do you do?
A)
You do your work and mind your own business. You continue to answer phone calls and welcome other clients. Your job is not to make conversation with the people sitting in the waiting room.
B)
To distract the client, you tell her all the latest office gossip and then launch into your favourite lawyer jokes.
C)
To help the client relax, you talk to her about the weather and you talk about how good the lawyers at the office are.

You explain to the law student how to apply for a job at the firm, and mention something about how the last student made a fool of himself at the Christmas party.
C)
You tell him that it is better to speak with the lawyer responsible for recruitment.
D)
You explain that the senior partner has a lot better things to do with her time rather than to talk to “new kids on the block like him”.

A)
You discreetly look in a couple of the more interesting files, but pretend that you have not seen anything.
B)
You read every document in the files of the most famous people so you have something to tell your friends.
C)
You are not interested in what is in the files, only in organizing them properly, and besides, you would never tell anyone about the lawyer’s clients.
